W520 Instructional Technology
I created this web page during the Spring 2013 semester for the W520 course Instructional Technology. The projects listed below demonstrate my ability to plan and implement educational technology. The applications I have used will enhance what I teach and ensure that all students will experience a technology rich learning environment.
Class 12
Videos & Posters
Videos can be used in the classroom to introduce new vocabulary, key terms in math and science, take video tours with social studies, or have students create their own classroom news videos. Video clips can also be used to provide background information on a particular subject. I explored several resources for incorporating videos into the classroom:
1. Tubechop
2. Stupeflix
3. Animoto
4. Schooltube.com
5. Kideos.com
6. Brightstorm.com
7. 50 alternatives to Youtube

Posters are great educational tools to use with students. Their importance stems from the fact that they present information, facts, and data not only in a visually attractive way but also using a multi-modal system that combines signs, images, charts and texts. I created the poster below using PowerPoint. A Word document could also be used. Other poster resources include:
1. Glogster
2. Posterini
3. Artskills
4. Poster My Wall
5. Befunky

Personal Learning Network
I have created a personal learning network using my Twitter account. As an educator, it is important for me to stay abreast of current news and trends in education. It is also important to seek out professional development opportunities. With my Twitter account, I have been able to collaborate and communicate with my peers and colleagues. I created a Word document to show the step by step procedures I did for this assignment. You may also click on the link below to follow me on Twitter.
Class 10
Podcast & Vodcast
A podcast is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio radio. A vodcast is a podcast that contains video content. The term vodcast comes from the combination of the words "video" and "podcast". Video podcasts may also be referred to as vidcasts. In order to watch a vodcast, you need a podcatcher capable of playing video such as iTunes.
Teaches can use podcasts for homework assignments, instructions, or to communicate with students. Teachers can also allow students to create their own podcast. Podcasting helps students develop language skills, critical thinking skills, and provides them with the opportunity to share their knowledge and opinions with a greater audience.
I created a podcast about my favorite Web 2.0 tool called Kerpoof. I used Podomatic to create my podcast. There are numerous websites dedicated to creating a podcast or vodcast. Here are a just a few: screencast-o-matic.com, screenr.com, podbean.com, sketchcast.com, and www.techsmith.com/jing.

Class 9
Google in the Classroom: Screencast
I explored the Searching with Google Workbook and chose the topic Chrome Web Store to research. I learned the function and various features of Chrome Apps, Extensions, and Themes. Chrome Apps are web-based programs that allow users to do thinks like create documents, edit photos, and listen to music without having to install complicated software. The Chrome Apps are accessed and used entirely within your browser. There are thousands of Apps to choose from and they automatically update. I learned that Chrome Extensions, unlike Apps, are always available in the tool bar, no matter what website you're on. I also learned you can personalize your Chrome browser by selecting from hundreds of Chrome Themes. I created a screencast tutorial explaining the Chrome Web Store and how to locate and use Chrome Apps, Extensions, and Themes.
Class 8
Popplet & Fotobabble
Popplet
Popplet is a tool that allows users to visualize ideas. Teachers and students can create graphic organizers, timelines, and many other forms of visual organization. I created a Popplet about technology hardware that can be used in the classroom.
Fotobabble
Fotobabble provides photo and audio techniques along with integrated applications to attract and engage students through the web, mobile and social networks. Students can provide their opinion on what they think is happening in a picture. For example: historical pictures, pictures of emotions, weather, etc.
Phrasr
Phrasr is an interactive web-based application that uses Flickr images to illustrate the phrases that users submit. Users can choose every image and then publish the entire phrase, which is shown as a personal slide show. I created the following phrase about education, see if you can figure out who uttered this famous quote:
Educational Resources
I reviewed several educational websites. I have listed the URL links and a brief description of the websites I found most valuable as classroom resources:

Voki, Polls & Flashcards
Voki
Voki is an application that lets you create personalized avatars to use on your wikis, blogs or websites. You can also e-mail the characters. This free web 2.0 tool is a great way to motivate learners of any age, because they are interactive and provide various options for students to customize them. It’s a great way to improve your students' speaking and listening skills in an engaging and innovative way.
Voki Lesson Plan: Students will analyze character composition in literature. They will understand the character’s personality and how it connects to the progression of the story. Students choose a character from the book they are reading to analyze. They will elaborate his or her personality with Voki. Students can customize their Vokis’ appearance and voice to resemble their chosen character from their book. After creating the visual representation of their character, students’ monologues can be creative to the extent that it pertains to the nature of their character.

Polls
Polleverywhere is free web based polling feature that offers real-time experience for events using mobile devices such as cell phones, ipods, or e-mail responses. Classroom polls could be used in a variety of ways:
1. Students evaluate their own learning
2. Daily bellringers or exit slip
3. Daily Journals
4. Check for understanding during a lesson
5. Make classroom decisions (ex: What should we name our class pet? How much more time do you
need on the paper?)
6. Assign as a homework assignment (ex: Answer the poll by midnight)
Once the poll has been created, users can choose from three chart varieties to embed their poll. Users can choose a web voting widget, live chart widget, or a chart image.

Flashcards
The first level of Bloom's Taxonomy is "remembering" and flashcards are a convenient tool to assist students with memorization. Flashcards can be used for any grade level and any subject matter. They are a great device for memorizing definitions, terms, historical dates, formulas, new languages, etc.
There are numerous websites to create digital flashcards. I researched three flashcard websites Flashcard Exchange, Flashcard Machine and Quizlet. Each of these websites allow links for users to share their flashcards. Flashcards can also be made using a Word document. I used Flashcard Exhange to create several flashcards about Netlingo terms.

Glyphs & Avatars
Glyphs are a pictorial form of data collection. Students in elementary school often create paper art projects for different seasons or holidays. It is easy to transform these traditional projects into mathematical glyphs that allow students to organize and analyze data.
I created this glyph about spring with a legend and student sample using Word document:

Avatars
An avatar is the graphical representation of the user or user's alter ego or character. It may take either a 3D form, as in games or virtual worlds, or 2D form as an icon. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.
Classroom avatars could be used in a variety of ways:
1. Teachers can create virtual tours using avatars. The guide could be a digital representation of the
teacher or of a completely different person.
2. Teachers of online courses can use avatars to make the Internet experience more personal and direct.
3. Instead of reading all of the course material, avatars create the opportunity for virtual lectures and
more interaction.
4. Teachers can design avatars to look like historical figures like Abraham Lincoln or Albert Einstein to
bring important lessons to life for students.
5. Students that are shy may use an avatar for presenting a book report or speech.

Linoit
Linoit is an online web sticky note service that can be used collaboratively to post memos, to-do lists, ideas, and photos anywhere on an online web canvas. Linoit could be used for student collaborative projects or for communicating with students or parents. I participated in a collaborative project using Linoit to research digital information.
Class 3

Tiki-Toki is web-based software for creating beautiful interactive timelines with embedded pictures, videos and/or audio that you can share on the internet. Timelines can be used for any subject area and any grade level, they can be as simple or complex as you desire. I created a timeline for the history of computers.
Artpad
Express yourself with artpad.art.com where you can create your own personal and unique art. Students can be creative, get moving and thinking instead of just listening to the teacher talk. Students are looking for something different and they want to interact. Artpad could be used in a variety of ways:
