R505 Multimedia Technology
I created this web page during the Fall 2013 semester for the R505 course Multimedia Technology. The goal of this course was to utilize various forms of media and effective ways to incorporate them into the classroom. The applications I have utilized will foster creativity and innovation in students.
Module 1 - Self Introduction Video
I created an introduction video using Prezi, a web-based presentation application and storytelling tool that uses a single canvas instead of traditional slides. I then recorded my screen presentation along with narration using Screencast-o-matic. Introduction videos could be used for teachers to introduce themselves to their class or to parents. Students could create introduction videos to meet and learn about their classmates.
Module 2 - Safe & Healthy Use of Technology
I read an article about digital natives and explored websites regarding plagiarism, copyright, and fair use. I then completed an online quiz to test my knowledge. I also explored the non-profit organization Creative Commons. This organization allows users to create copyright licenses free of charge. The licences allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve and which rights they waive for the benefit of others. I completed an answer key about using technology in a safe, legal, and ethical manner.
Module 3 - Visual Vocabulary
Visual vocabulary consists of images that stand for words or assist in explaining their meaning. Visual vocabulary can benefit student learning and retention. I created several library visual vocabulary flashcards using the free website Quizlet. This website provides learning tools for students which features flashcards, speller, tests, and games as well as audio pronunciation available in 18 languages. There are tools that allow users to print, export, copy and embed the flashcards.
Module 4 - Lesson Trailer
A lesson trailer video can be used to capture the attention of students. I created a library lesson trailer to capture students' attention and teach the proper way to find a "Just Right Book" in the library. I used Stupeflix, a free web-based application to make fun, easy videos. Teachers could use lesson trailers to introduce a lesson, new topic, or embed in a presentation or website.
Module 5 - Online Lesson
Online lessons can be used for distance learning, introduce a new topic, or reinforce a lesson. I developed an online math lesson using materials to demonstrate my ability to use technology to reach diverse learners by incorporating problem solving and higher level thinking. I used Promethean to write on the screen and Screencast-o-matic to record the lesson that I published on YouTube.
Module 6 - Digital Story
Storytelling has been used for centuries as a way to teach and pass down knowledge and fables. Digital storytelling is the 21st century, multimedia version of this traditional art. I created an online tutorial about the features and uses of Little Bird Tales. This online storytelling medium could be used by students in pre-K through 6th grade.
Module 7 - Glyph
I created a glyph in response to my instructors directions. I explored the use of free online sketchpads and photo imaging such as mugtug and picmonkey.
Module 8 - Image Editing
VoiceThread is a free web-based application used to download images, videos, and documents to create asynchronous conversations and to make comments using any mix of text, microphone, web cam or audio files. Teachers and students could use this technology for peer feedback, evaluation, self-reflection, goal setting, digital portfolio, or to explore any subject matter. I created a VoiceThread about the library which included a slide about the use in the classroom, adaptations, and higher-order thinking skills.
Module 9 & 10 Professional Development Presentation
I created a presentation for professional development to showcase my use of technology and ability to explain the use of VoiceThread. My presentation explains the use of the technology, how it can be used in the classroom, benefits of the technology, and how to actually use the technology. I also included resources, video instructions, hyperlinks, ideas for diverse learners, and current trends.
Module 13 - Discussion Posts
I have attached a Word document that includes all of my discussion posts from Edmodo used during this online class.
